On the fence with Musonga Mbogo

Mustard Flats Photo Essay

Artworks line a section fence in the backyard of Musonga Mbogo’s South Canberra home. Mustard Flats had the chance to spend some time with Musonga Mbogo while he prepared for his upcoming solo exhibition at Hake House Gallery in North Sydney. Giving an exclusive look at what went into creating some of the 10ft artworks.

This section of a fence has become a huge part of his work and its impact can be seen imprinted on the canvas through texture, wood chips and grass adding to the paint and crayon design. The fence has now travelled up the Hume Hwy to be installed in the show.

As long as I’m standing here, the ideas will start flowing
— Musonga Mbogo

This will be Musonga’s first show in 4 years, but he hasn't slowed down spending time creating work for album covers, magazine, festivals and recently for Triple J. He is currently also creating the artwork for the new children's hospital in Canberra. But despite this success his works are still stored in the humble garden shed of the family home. Asked if he'd like to move to a professional art studio, maybe one day but for now being surrounded by family and being creatively comfortable is hard to pass up.

His mum would watch through the back window and his brothers would be playing soccer metres away all contributing to the development of his craft through the years. Now this show is dedicated to family and named after his youngest brother Kione.
