E.L.K & Byrd Podcast #17

Never far from controversy E.L.K’s recent exhibition at the Ambush Gallery drew praise and criticism when a number of works were removed after public pressure. Now he’s back in town working on a large-scale mural for the next 3 weeks. Early on he cut his teeth as a sign writer before eventually picking up the scalpel, over the last decade he has cemented himself as Australia’s greatest stencil artist. His work is known for this intricate detail and his ability to push the limits with what can be done with the medium. Some of his works use over 100 layers to bring out powerful images which often feature themes of war, religion and politics. He was the first street artist to have work accepted into the Archibald Prize and been shown in exhibitions around the world. Traveling to war ravaged corners of the globe teaching and creating, he has made it his mission to give back where he can.

Byrd has well and truly made his mark on Canberra from bombing the streets to being displayed in the National Gallery. His work has become part of the city landscape at local shops and community spaces everywhere. During festivals and exhibitions his work can also take on the 3D form using recycled boxes to create dystopian car wrecks and sculptures.

For decades these two artists have helped brighten up some of the city's darkest parts and help give communities an identity and a sense of place.
