First look at Canberra’s new live music venue

Mustard Flats got an exclusive sneak peek at the new Transit Bar opening on Jan 12.

The Akuna Street basement had long been a live music hub for Canberra’s local acts and left a big gap when it closed in May 2020. Many huge bands, rappers and DJ’s consistently brought the energy of larger festival shows to the modest stage, causing many a Waldorf resident to dial up the local authorities. It looks like this new location will be more suited to that same atmosphere, with lots of help from the 100s of sound proofing panels.

Watch the first look tour with Joel Tyrrell and Charlotte Reynolds here:

A fresh fit out of the old Hog Breath Cafe at Bailey's Corner will hopefully breathe new life into the CBD and local music scene.

Owner Charlotte Reynolds says they felt restricted at the old venue and is looking forward to more possibilities at Gig City.

Definitely have a fresh start for Transit and turn it into something bigger and better.
— Charlotte Reynolds

Space was always an issue at the old venue with an air conditioning unit and plumbing being a big part of the stage design. The new area is sure to provide a more comfortable experience for the bands and patrons.

When The Church Bar closed in 2006 the old Transit picked up where it left off and became home to hundreds on touring gigs over the years including Ball Park Music, Seth Sentry, SAFIA, Club Feet, DZ Deathrays, DJ Shadow, Cut Chemist, Remi and the Ansah Brothers. Many of the bars old features have returned including the same posters lining the walls.

With the loss of Phoenix, Mr Wolf and the old Transit, Civic has missed a medium sized live music venue. Transit Gig City is set to change that.

Plenty of gigs coming up from Jan 12 check out their website for more details www.transit.bar
